Shocking Situation of Infants in Shelter Camps

Case study and Infants Survey Report For Camp Faiz Ilahi 2022

Background

When there were heavy rains in and around Shahdadkot and the flood that occurred as a result of the rains, the entire Qamber Shahdadkot district became a victim. Faiz Elahi School was the first and strongest shelter for the flood-affected people, most of whom were from Taluka Qubu Saeed Khan. The flood victims had already turned towards Shahdad Kot from Qubo Saeed Khan taluka, then the doors of Faiz Elahi School were opened for them.

And all this work was done by this young man and his friends who had been defeated in the recent local body elections. But this defeat did not defeat his passion to help people! Yes, I am talking about Raja Ramiz Tonio, who started participating in this charity. And soon, like other schools and colleges of Shahdadkot, this school was filled with flood-affected people, whose houses were submerged in the flood.

People took shelter, but now the problem was how to arrange their food and drink.

In the early days, Ramiz requested philanthropists and arranged some food for the people living in this camp. But going forward, some other philanthropists who were devoted to the human spirit also contributed to this charity. Finally, the work started and two meals were available to the people. There used to be biryani and roti and curry at other times.

Civil Society Response

Mehran Welfare Society is a trusted society and works for people in Shahdadkot. Most of the people working in Mehran Welfare Society have had a good experience working in previous floods as well. They are also working in this flood with the same spirit. This organization regularly contributed to this charity and took credit for the regular arrangement of giving two meals a day. Apart from this, he also gave wipers, brooms, and other cleaning equipment to the flood victims living in the rooms for health and cleanliness, so that people can take care of their cleanliness.

The transformer was damaged in the school area, which was repaired by Ramiz Tonio and his colleagues with the help of philanthropists. The electrical system was restored in the school to avoid mosquitoes and heat. In this camp, there are more children, women, and old people.

Medical Support

After a few days, people complained of some diseases. These friends arranged a medical camp there for one day. 160 patients were checked up free of cost. Malaria, diarrhea, skin diseases, darkness before the eyes, diabetes, and other diseases were diagnosed.

There were also some women who had gyno problems. He was given immediate medical attention. The medical camp was organized by Al Khidmat Foundation and Dr. Imtiaz Shaikh.

The woman who gave birth at night was also brought to the medical camp. Along with this, other pregnant women were also provided immediate medical assistance. But remember this is not enough. The need is more.

Our Intervention

Jagerta Welfare Association planned to conduct a survey regarding infants and Pregnant women in camps of Shahdadkot city for the First Phase.  Our Social Mobilizing Team conducted a survey and below shocking findings have been observed.

Facts and Figures

There are 40 women in the camp who have 48 infants. 18 girls, 30 boys, and a total of 40 women with 177 children, including 100 boys and 70 girls. Among them, there are 3 women who had childbirth during the flood and their children are less than 1 month old. There are 7 women whose children are between the age of 3 months and 6 months and the number of such children is 9.

10 children are between 7 and 12 months. There are 12 children who are between 13 months to  2 years old.

Out of these 40 women, 23 are mothers who are giving their own milk to their children and 17 women are so weak and malnourished that they are unable to give milk to their children.

The 23 mothers who are giving their own milk to their children are not enough to even for those children for whom those mothers were giving other milk like Lactogen, Nido, etc. to their children before the flood. After the flood, their conditions are not such that they can arrange it. 39 women were giving powdered milk to their children as a nutrition supplement. Now there is a fear of acute malnutrition in these children due to the absence of this milk.

It is equivalent to facing a different kind of disaster. Before the flood, the women who could not get powdered milk due to poverty were feeding their children from a goat or cow or any other woman in the village. Due to the flood, the other breastfeeding women were displaced somewhere. There is no livestock.

In this camp, 2 meals a day are being given by the philanthropists, but these children are in dire need of milk. Out of these 48 children, 45 children also need Cerelac, Lactogen, and fruits.

Out of these 40 women, there are 10 women who do not have their own or their husband's National Identity Card. 16 women have their own cards and the remaining 24 women do not have their national identity cards. Out of these 40 women, the husbands of 14 had National Identity Card.

Government Response

No facility has been given by the government in this camp. Neither treatment physician nor a medical facility. Here you will find a lot of problems if not that is support or initiatives from the government.

When the flood victims were accommodated, that too was arranged through community sharing and not through government initiatives.

This camp is not yet included in the government-registered camp. When people came here, there was no toilet facility around. Because the toilets were still under construction. Philanthropists joined together and completed it by contributing their contribution to the construction work. And for its cleaning, two people should be kept for cleaning at their own expense so that it can be cleaned.

Now the need is that when the government is not providing any facility to these people, at least this camp should be registered.
